Carmel is a historic town in Putnam County, New York with history dating back to the American Revolution. Located 56 miles north of New York City, the Carmel Central School District provides a high-quality education for students within a pristine suburban setting in the Lower Hudson Valley. The District encompasses 85 square miles and serves students from two counties (Putnam and Dutchess) and six towns. The area is home to the Great Swamp (New York’s largest freshwater wetlands), Fahnestock State Park, The Chuang Yen Monastery, and the Thunder Ridge Ski Area. The Metro North Railroad has tracks running through Putnam County with stations in Brewster, Southeast and Patterson which run into Grand Central Station. The District has three elementary schools, serving grades K-4, one middle school serving grades 5-8, and one high school, with a total of approximately 3700 students.
The Carmel Central School District Board of Education seeks a superintendent of schools who:
Possesses exceptional qualities and utilizes process and systems to focus on results to further the district's mission and vision and cultivate trust and partnerships among and between all stakeholders. Is a forward-thinking leader who understands the changing environment of education and what is needed to grow and thrive as a district.
Is a proactive leader with excellent communication skills and is visible and approachable to students, staff, parents, and community. A leader who appreciates the traditions of the past and has the vision to work with the entire school community to meet the needs of the future.
Has a willingness to empower, trust and delegate authority to the district’s leaders and staff while stressing accountability. The ability to ensure a high-functioning Board of Education through sound governance and defined roles and responsibilities.
Minimally, all candidates must be eligible for a New York School Administrator certification. The first round of interviews will be scheduled for either August 11th or August 13th, 2025, and final interviews will take place shortly after. The final candidate will be offered a regionally competitive compensation package commensurate with experience.
