The NORTH SHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT, located on the north shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York, is seeking a Superintendent of Schools.
The 2,600 students in the North Shore School District are enrolled in three elementary schools,1 middle school and 1 high school. The district, which serves a rich mix of students, has a long tradition of high-achieving students and the community is very supportive of the school district and its students. The district places a strong emphasis on knowing each child well and providing an instructional program that meets the needs of the individual learner. Stakeholders are committed to excellence, to a student-centered philosophy, and to enhancing an already successful school district and community.
The schools in the district have achieved recognition for excellence. Recently, the high school was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School for Exemplary High Performance; two of the elementary schools and the middle school received recognition as Best K - 8 Schools Ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Individual students, musicians and athletic teams have all been recognized for their achievements
The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can build upon the district’s many accomplishments while respecting the school and community cultures and its student-centered vision.
Among the many hallmarks of the North Shore School District recently cited by staff, parents, students, and members of the community were:

- Small district where the superintendent can get to know everyone and be involved.
- Staff and administrators are excellent, knowledgeable, and maintain a focus on high academic achievement, while creating a learning environment in which all students can excel academically and socially
- North Shore prides itself on developing collaborative, innovative and inquisitive learners who aspire to make positive contributions to society.
- Outstanding and diverse curricular offerings including STEAM, the arts, second language beginning in the elementary school, IB/AP, sports, mindfulness, and many, many other offerings
- Strong commitment to the community as demonstrated by 2nd and 3rd generation families living in the district.
Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent, also cited by staff and residents, are:
- Addressing the impact of the LIPA lawsuit and PILOTS on the district’s budget and taxes
- Understanding the culture of the North Shore community
- Working with the board members and community members to create a cohesive understanding of the district’s priorities
Following significant staff and community engagement, the North Shore Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new superintendent:
The successful candidate will be:
- An experienced, district-wide leader of the highest integrity, with proven success as a visionary who is able to both understand a district and move it forward to achieve new and challenging goals.
- A skilled communicator (listener, writer, speaker) who will be highly visible in the schools and in the community.
- A leader with successful teaching experience and, preferably, proven success as a building administrator and superintendent, knowledgeable about school budgeting and finances.
- A student-centered leader who will advocate for the success of all learners and continue the district’s strong commitment to the whole child.
- A leader able to cultivate a positive school and district climate.
The Board of Education is offering a regionally-competitive compensation package. New York State certification as a School District Administrator or School District Leader is required for appointment.
