Reports To: High School Executive Principal and Superintendent or his/her designee
Supervises: All Arlington High School staff and others as assigned
This twelve-month administrative position requires a dynamic, creative, and articulate individual with a comprehensive knowledge of instructional best practices in all areas of child development, learning theory, curriculum, instruction and assessment. The House Principal supervises and evaluates the faculty and staff in accordance with district evaluation procedures which promote professional growth and ensure high standards of professional accountability. The House Principal embraces and models the core values of the district and is committed to the development of the whole child and the belief that all children can learn.
The House Principal will provide continuous and consistent administrative leadership to a defined subgroup of students throughout their high school attendance under the overall leadership of the Executive Principal. The House Principal will promote the unique identity of the smaller subgroup of students within the larger setting of the school’s overall enrollment, will foster a spirit of cohesiveness and belonging, and will develop long-term relationships with students and parents for the purpose of providing a more personalized educational experience for each student. The House Principal will develop a unique perspective of the students within the social and academic context of their most immediate peers and will use this perspective to provide more individualized oversight, guidance and educational leadership. The House Principal will otherwise support the school and district’s instructional programs by working with all other staff to assist students in their personal, social, and intellectual development consistent with the mission, core values, and strategic objectives set forth by the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education.
Specific activities include, but are not limited to the following:
Works with department coordinators to design programmatic and instructional initiatives
Provides instructional leadership and guidance for faculty
Directly supervises one or more Assistant Principals and all other house staff, including but not limited to school counselors, social workers, psychologists and secretaries assigned to the house or subgroup team
Participates in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing and recommending new staff members for the High School
Assumes overall responsibility for a specific cohort, grade level or subgroup of high school students
Establishes individual and group performance goals
Works directly with the Assistant Principal(s) to assure the physical and social-emotional safety and well-being of students and staff within the house
Meets individually or as part of a team on a regular basis with those students who are struggling academically and/or behaviorally
Maintains an active and visible presence during the school day and beyond
Assumes responsibility for upholding and enforcing the District Code of Conduct and provides disciplinary consequences as appropriate
Continues their own professional growth through memberships, attendance at relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences
Participates in building and district committees
Carries out all district policies, regulations and directives
Accepts responsibility, as assigned by the Executive Principal, for overall school management and special projects (i.e., testing schedule, graduation, etc.) that may go beyond the scope of specific house responsibilities
Provides for in-service training for a specific house or the High School in general
Collaborates with the Executive Principal to implement all aspects of the Annual Professional Performance Review process and supervises the evaluation process for staff members as assigned
Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, as well as other school-sponsored activities and functions
Engages stake-holders, including students, parents, faculty and community members, in a shared commitment to the goals of the District
Serves as a liaison to various community groups in an effort to encourage positive public relations and opportunities for Arlington students to be actively engaged in their community
Perform such duties in addition to those described above as may be assigned by the Executive Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee
New York State Certification as a School Building Leader (S.B.L.) or School Administration and Supervision (S.A.S)
Experience as a high school administrator preferred
