MARION P. THOMAS CHARTER SCHOOL SUMMARY:

Marion P. Thomas Charter School (MPTCS) is the largest independently-operated free public charter school in Newark, NJ. It was established in 1999 by a group of individuals who were born and raised in Newark and wanted to provide the best possible educational experience for the next generation of Newark students. MPTCS is the largest minority-led charter school in Newark and is one of a few such schools in the country, reflecting both its student population and the community it serves. Since 1999, MPTCS has grown from four classrooms to four campuses and now serves 1,500 students from pre-kindergarten through 12^th grade. The District is seeking an innovative, dynamic, forward-thinking, collaborative educational leader to empower and inspire all of our scholars to excel and ensure they are prepared for college, careers, and life.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting directly to the Board of Trustees (Board), the Superintendent sets the strategic vision and direction for the instructional framework and pedagogical approach to Marion P. Thomas Charter Schools’ academic programs and is a key lever to accomplish the district’s academic goals.  The Superintendent is the primary advocate for the students and parents of the District and is responsible for the students’ academic growth. The Superintendent is the leader, spokesperson, and resident expert on curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, and learning. This role develops the short- and long-term instructional vision and works to establish a culture of high expectations and shared responsibility for equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction. The Superintendent works to create authentic partnerships between district offices and schools to ensure closer alignment of district resources with school needs, to implement an instructional plan for the district that ensures effective teaching in every classroom, and to create conditions that ensure systemic improvement of practice over time in every classroom. The Superintendent is responsible for all instructional functions including K-12 curriculum and instruction, professional development, student services, Title I, special education, family engagement, gifted and talented, social and emotional learning and college and career readiness.
