The Lakeland Central School District, a top-rated public school system in the Hudson Valley, is seeking a Superintendent of Schools upon the retirement of its Superintendent, Dr. George Stone, who is completing his 10th year as superintendent in the district. Lakeland is the largest suburban school district in Westchester County, encompassing six different towns: Yorktown, Cortlandt and Somers in Westchester County and Carmel, Philipstown, and Putnam Valley in neighboring Putnam County. The district is comprised of five elementary schools serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade, one middle school for the sixth through eighth graders, and two high schools. The student population is approximately 6,000. The community’s location affords easy access to the business, cultural, and recreational opportunities offered in New York City and the lower Hudson Valley.
The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can build upon the district’s many accomplishments while respecting the school and community cultures and its student-centered vision.

A collaborative professional environment with strong labor-management relations;
A school board that works well together;
A very diverse population, ethnically and socio-economically;
A community with a history of budget and bond issue support.
Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent, also cited by staff and residents, are:
Being visible in the district and community while meeting all the demands of the superintendency
Implementing a successful strategic planning process that brings staff, students, and community together around a clearly-stated focus for the district;
Managing a district of this size and complexity by
Addressing the challenges of transition and equity that exist with a configuration of two high schools following after a single middle school experience;
Developing greater curricular and programmatic vertical articulation from 5 elementary to 1 middle to 2 high school buildings;
Addressing the needs of non-college bound students;
Updating the technology infrastructure for instructional purposes;
Anticipating and addressing potential financial restrictions, which may develop as the economy changes.
Following significant staff and community engagement, the Lakeland Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new Superintendent.
