The Eastchester Union Free School District, a top-rated public school district, is seeking a Superintendent of Schools upon the retirement of its Superintendent, Dr. Walter Moran, who is completing his 18th year in the district, the last five as the Superintendent of Schools. Eastchester is nestled between Scarsdale and Bronxville in southern Westchester County, and affords easy access to the business, cultural, and recreational opportunities offered in New York City and the lower Hudson Valley.
The district is on an upward trajectory, with a growing student enrollment, a stable and dedicated staff and faculty, enhanced facilities, and vibrant community support. A past winner of the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School designation, Eastchester High School recently celebrated the completion of its facilities expansion and modernization. The district’s 3,126 students are housed in five schools: the high school and middle school, which share a campus; and three elementary schools, which are centered on a modified Princeton Plan. The Eastchester students are motivated, engaged, high performing, and benefit from a highly supportive faculty, PTA, school community and nine-member Board of Education.
The Board of Education is seeking a leader who can build upon the district’s many accomplishments while respecting the school and community cultures and its student-centered vision.
Among the many hallmarks of the Eastchester Union Free School district recently cited by the staff and residents are:
A highly supportive, close-knit, and engaged community;
A settled community with a history of budget and bond issue support;
Bright, productive, and motivated students;
An historically-stable school board with few anticipated membership changes;
Devoted, qualified, and dedicated teachers, staff, and administrators;
A parent community that wants the best for all children;
A vibrant school district which is primed for change;
A school district which considers the social and emotional wellness of students to be a purpose of schooling.
Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent, also cited by staff and residents, are:
Bringing staff and community together around a clearly-stated focus for the district;
Mentoring and coaching newly-appointed building level and central administrators;
Building a strong technology infrastructure for instructional purposes;
Implementing a successfully strategic planning process leading to a Vision with clearly understood core values and goals;
Creating a comprehensive, financed plan for meeting technology needs.
Following significant staff and community engagement, the Eastchester Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new Superintendent.
The successful candidate will have:
a student-centered vision for elevating an already-high-achieving district;
superior communication skills, will be visible, and will establish a respected and trusted presence in the district while recommending meaningful change;
proven skills in hiring, retaining, and coaching a talented faculty and leadership team;
a collaborative approach to partnering with all the stakeholders of the district and community;
expertise in strategic planning, curriculum and instruction, technology, finance, budget and facility planning
The Board of Education is offering a regionally-competitive compensation package. New York State certification as School District Leader or School District Administrator is required for appointment. Applications must be submitted online at www.leadschools.us by February 18, 2018 (click on “current vacancies”). In addition to completing the basic application, candidates are asked to upload a cover letter describing how they meet the above criteria, together with their current resume. All applications will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
