One of New York’s most highly-regarded public schools is seeking a Superintendent of Schools upon the retirement of its current, long-term Superintendent. The Amagansett school district, on Eastern Long Island, offers its residents a Pre K-Grade 6 school experience for 90 students with 27 faculty. Their 96 students in grades 7-12 are tuitioned to attend middle and high school in the neighboring community of East Hampton.
Amagansett’s diverse student body is high performing, supported by many parent volunteers and an engaged community, PTA, and Board of Education. For more information, please visit www.aufsd.org.
Among the many hallmarks of The Amagansett School recently cited by staff and residents are:
Students consistently perform at high levels at Amagansett and in later years
Amagansett is a very special place where older children regularly interact with younger children (reading to them, class projects, etc.) in a family-oriented environment
Class sizes are small, allowing for significant individualized instruction
A talented and dedicated teaching staff provide an abundance of excellent and unique resources
Parents, the PTA, and the community are very active and supportive
Some of the major leadership challenges for the new superintendent, also cited by staff and residents, are:
Primary responsibility for financial, business and HR functions
The challenge of meeting all legal requirements of a large district in a small-size district
The potential impact of a new housing development on enrollment and budget
The superintendent wears “every hat” in such a small district
Following significant staff and community engagement, the Amagansett Board of Education has approved the following specifications for its search for a new Superintendent.
The successful candidate will:
Be a warm, thoughtful, caring and experienced teacher and leader, familiar with current trends in elementary education while committed to honor the traditions and culture of the Amagansett School
Have a very strong financial background in district business and human resources administration
Demonstrate superior communication skills with all stakeholders (speaking, writing, listening)
Be open, transparent, and flexible in working collaboratively with staff, parents and the community
Utilize creativity in addressing and resolving problems
