The District also operates the Chatham Public Library, one of only two public libraries in NYS that are part of a school district.
The District prides itself on being a small school able to offer a wide range of programs and services, including universal pre-k, AP and college-level courses, STEM and business programs, Shakespeare and the only public school orchestra in the county. The school actively collaborates with community organizations to provide resources that benefit and enrich our students. Approximately 76% of graduating seniors pursue higher education at four- and two-year colleges.
The District includes parts of the towns of Chatham, Ghent, Austerlitz, Canaan, Kinderhook, and New Lebanon - all located in historic and picturesque Columbia County. The Village serves as the center of the ...District, both geographically and in terms of business and culture, offering boutique shops, fine dining, art galleries, a historic movie theater, and a craft brewery coupled with days-gone-by Main Street charm. Outside the Village are rural towns with quaint hamlets and historic homes, farms and orchards supported by a thriving farm-to-table industry, Queechy Lake, state forests, and nature preserves providing ample access to the area’s abundant natural resources. The District is also home to numerous performing and visual art venues, artist colonies, fish and game clubs, an active foxhunting and beagling society, a cidery, and a winery. The area is host to numerous events, from small-town community festivals, to the Columbia County Fair, to a 10-day international film festival.
Museums, colleges, major concert venues, skiing, and dirt-track auto racing are all nearby. Just minutes south is the county seat of Hudson, an antiques, art, and foodie hotspot. To the east, the District shares its border with the Berkshire Region of Massachusetts. Chatham is a 30-minute commute to Albany and the Tech Valley Region, where many people in the area make their living, and a two-and-a-half-hour drive from both New York City and Boston, making the area popular with second homeowners.
